Differentiation isn't something that occurs all the time, every day in the classroom. Teachers who plan to use differentiation in their class must be very organized and prepared when they do decide to use it. Assigning tasks to students based on their strengths is a huge component in order for DI to be successful. It's important for educators to understand that the goal is for students to become responsible for their own learning and to develop life long skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. It's all critical to insure that even though the class may look to an outside observer that students are randomly completing tasks, they actually have specific goals that must be completed in a designated time. It is also important for the instructor to be able to gage how the students are learning such as entrance/exit cards, 3 before me rule(student asking three other students a question before asking teacher who may be teaching other students), and thumbs up/down. Building a community among the students is also important for the students to understand that their role is critical to the goal of the class.
